‘Counselling, community support critical in preventing drug abuse’

Srinagar, Apr 27: As part of the two week program , IRTIQA,2025 (Deeksharambh , Foundation Programme), Dean Students Welfare, SKUAST-K in collaboration with The Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu and Kashmir (UT), today organised a  Red Cross cum First Aid Awareness Programme at the university premises.

The event attracted wide participation from students, faculty, and healthcare professionals. The theme of the program was Mind Matters- (First Aid & Lecture on Drug Abuse. The event took a kickstart with the welcoming remarks of anchors; Hamnah Geelani from Faculty of Agriculture Wadura and Sadiya Zargar from Faculty of Forestry, Ganderbal.

The formal welcome address was given by the programme incharge, Prof.Syed Naseem Geelani HoB SBS, Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-K

In his speech, Prof Naseem said that drug abuse is one of the most serious challenges affecting individuals, families, and communities. It not only harms the physical and mental health of the user but also destroys relationships, careers, and futures. “Addiction can lead to crime, violence, and poverty. Early education, counselling, and community support are critical in preventing drug abuse. It is important for all of us, especially the youth, to stay informed, make healthy choices, and seek help when needed. Awareness and compassion can make a real difference,” he said.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr. Imtiaz Hussain Mansur, renowned Senior Consultant and General Adult Psychiatrist, Shri G.A. Qureshi, Honorary Treasurer, Indian Red Cross Society J&K (UT); Dr. Aasia Noor, Medical Officer and Master Trainer in First Aid; and  Juwaira Zahoor, dedicated Red Cross volunteer. Their presence underscored the vital role of humanitarian service and emergency preparedness in contemporary society.

A special highlight of the programme was the keynote address delivered by Dr. Imtiaz Hussain Mansur. Drawing upon his global experience, notably with Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar, Dr. Mansur spoke eloquently on the theme “Mind Matters” including the " Menace of Drugs in the Valley," emphasizing the inextricable link between mental health, first aid responsiveness, and holistic well-being. His message resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring a broader discourse on mental resilience and early intervention.

The programme featured live demonstrations by Asia Noor and Juwaira Zahoor on essential first aid techniques, discussions on the significance of mental health first aid, and interactive sessions aimed at empowering participants to respond effectively in emergencies, whether physical or psychological.

Speaking on the occasion, G.A. Qureshi reaffirmed the Indian Red Cross Society’s enduring commitment to building resilient communities through education, service, and compassion. Dr. Aasia Noor highlighted the critical need for first aid literacy among youth, while Juwaira Zahoor encouraged students to volunteer and contribute actively to humanitarian efforts.
