Srinagar Dec 04: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Wednesday raised concerns over the proposed railway line projects through agriculture lands in south Kashmir parts, saying “connectivity shouldn’t happen at the cost of ecology”.

She said the proposed railway line projects will impact adversely on livelihood and environment at local level.

“Development shouldn’t be done at the cost of livelihood. The proposed railway line will cut through existing orchards, which are primary source of sustainable income for many people in the area. Though we are not against development, but it must not come at the cost of ecology, environment and livelihood,” Iltija Mufti told reporters in Srinagar.

It is worthwhile to mention that the proposed railway project, which is part of the broader effort to expand Jammu and Kashmir's rail connectivity, is expected to pass through fertile agricultural and orchard lands in south Kashmir.

Iltija urged the government to explore alternative routes or solutions to minimize the adverse impact on orchards and agricultural land. She highlighted the importance of striking a balance between development and sustainability, stating that preserving the region's ecological integrity is vital for its long-term prosperity.
