Delhi, Feb 22: The president of Indian National Congress (INC) Malikarjun Kharge on Saturday paid tribute to India's first education minister and "distinguished" freedom fighter, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his death anniversary. He said that Maulana was committed to secular and democratic nation and opposed the partition of India on religious lines.

While honouring Azad's contribution in a tweet on X, The leader of opposition in Rajya sabha, Malikarjun Kharge described him as distinguished freedom fighter, scholar and statesman. Adding that former congress president is an inspiration to nation-building.

"We honour the remarkable contributions of India's first Education Minister, distinguished freedom fighter, scholar and statesman, Bharat Ratna and our inspiration, Former Congress President, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, to nation-building." Mr. Kharge stated on X.

He added, "His commitment to a democratic and secular nation was exemplified by his resolute opposition to the religious partition of India."

Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin popularly known as Abul Kalam Azad was an Indian politician, writer and activist of the Indian independence movement. A senior leader of the Indian National Congress, following India's independence, he became the first Minister of Education of Indian. Born on 11 November 1888, Azad passed away on 22 February 1958.
