The speakers, while addressing the gathering at the event presided over by Bhalla, recalled the role of the Quit India Movement of 1942, launched by the INC, in achieving the goal of freedom.

“While Mahatma Gandhi was in jail, his wife Kasturba Gandhi expired; Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru remained in jail for nearly three years till March 1945. The entire leadership was in jail, but it was Indira Gandhi who returned from Srinagar airport and led the entire movement. This movement forced Britishers to leave this country, and India attained freedom in 1947,” the speakers recalled.

“However, there are forces and organisations which did not participate in the Quit India Movement and sided with the Britishers but today they are questioning Congress and its leadership. In an irony, their descendants now claim to be ultra-nationalists and question the credibility and loyalty of the Congress party. The present regime wants to distort the history of the nation and misguide young generations,” Bhalla alleged.

Senior Congress leaders Balwan Singh, ex-MLA; JKPCC chief spokesperson and ex-MLC Ravinder Sharma; ex-minister Yogesh Sawhney; ex-MLC Ved Mahajan; ex-MLA Balbir Singh; ex-ministers Yash Pal Kundal and G M Saroori, among others, participated in the event.

Bhalla said that the younger generations would have to draw inspiration from freedom fighters to fight against injustice and threats to democracy, especially through what he alleged, "the bungling in the election process".

He declared the Congress would have to fight the battle for safeguarding the freedom, democracy, and Constitution of India and fully support the leadership at this juncture.
