Srinagar, May 15: Senior Congress leader Vikar Rasool Wani today visited several villages in Uri sector of Baramulla and expressed solidarity with the residents affected by recent cross-border shelling.

Wani led a high-level delegation that extensively toured the affected regions, including Rajanwari, Bandi, Lagama, Salambad, Calkalgi, Daradkate, Dachi, Soki-Dhanic, and several other settlements. At every stop, he interacted directly with residents to assess damage to homes, livelihoods, and places of worship, especially local Masjids.

Those who were part of delegation includes G N Monga, (Senior Vice President); Fayaz Ahmad Dar, (Vice President); Irfan Naqeshibandi and B.A. Khan, (General Secretaries); Irshad Ahmad Budoo, (District President Baramulla); Showkat Ahmad Bhat, (Working President Srinagar); Fawad Khan, (Vice President Srinagar); and Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, (Vice President Baramulla).

Wani at the occasion called upon government authorities to provide urgent relief measures. He demanded a compensation package of Rs 20 lakh per affected family and the allocation of 10 marlas of land for those displaced due to cross-border hostilities.

“The residents of our border villages are living under constant threat and deserve our fullest support. These brave citizens are the first line of defense for our nation, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their well-being and security,” Wani said while addressing the affected communities.

Moved by the personal stories of loss and resilience, Mr. Wani added, “The pain endured by these people is my own pain. I have witnessed immense loss and unimaginable courage among our people.”

Further strengthening his commitment, Wani assured locals of his advocacy for the construction of individual bunkers in vulnerable zones and additional rehabilitation measures to enhance safety and resilience in these high-risk areas.

He also vowed to flag up the matter with top leadership of All India Congress Committee (AICC), including Congress President & Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

“I will personally ensure your voices reach the highest echelons of our party leadership, which has always stood by the people of Jammu and Kashmir during times of crisis,” he said.

He recalled the effective and compassionate relief efforts led by the Congress Party during the 2005 earthquake under the dynamic leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh and Smt. Sonia Gandhi, which earned the party national appreciation for its dedication and service.

District administration officials acknowledged receipt of the delegation’s demands and assured they would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for timely consideration.
