Rajouri, Aug 5: Marking the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, the Congress unit of Rajouri, under the leadership of local MLA Iftkhar Ahmed, staged a protest demonstration on Monday.

Congress workers assembled in the town at Dr. BR Ambedkar Park and raised slogans against the government's move to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

The protesters also attempted to take out a protest rally through the main roads of Rajouri and tried to move towards Gujjar Mandi but the attempt was foiled by police and protesters were forcibly stopped infront of police station Rajouri where scores of workers as well as leaders from Congress led by MLA Rajouri Iftkhar Ahmed were detained and taken to police station Rajouri.

They were later released from police station over completion of necessary legal proceedings.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Rajouri Iftkhar Ahmed said the people of the region have been deprived of their constitutional rights, and demanded that full statehood be restored without further delay.

Speaking at the event, party representatives asserted that statehood is not a privilege but a rightful demand of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“It is imperative for the Government of India to fulfill its commitment and return statehood to J&K. The aspirations of the people must be honoured,” they said.
