Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi said that the Congress had “broken into pieces” the national song in the name of social harmony and continued to pursue “appeasement politics.”

He also accused Nehru of agreeing to the view that Vande Mataram could alienate Muslims. Responding sharply, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh dismissed the Prime Minister’s remarks, calling him “the Master Distorian”.
