Commuters demand opening of MA Road intersection
Srinagar, Dec 22: Commuters have demanded opening of the MA Road intersection for vehicular movement from Sangarmal side.
Commuters said that due to the diversion at MA Road, all vehicles from Downtown bound for city centre areas via Lal Chowk have to take U-turn at intersection near J&K Bank headquarters. They said this causes massive traffic jam at the vital intersection taking a heavy toll on commuters.
“Two intersections have been closed at MA Road. The major one is the Sangarmal intersection. Traffic cops place barricades on the road to divert traffic from Downtown towards TRC crossing. This brings traffic to a grinding halt on one side of MA Road leading to TRC crossing,” said Abdul Hamid a commuter. “This diversion wastes our time and fuel. In case of a medical emergency, this diversion can risk lives of patients as even ambulances are stuck in jam on MA Road created by this unnecessary diversion,” he added.
The problem is compounded by the failure of authorities to restore a defunct traffic light system at the intersection. “We appeal to SSP Traffic, Srinagar City, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah to immediately remove the traffic diversion at Sangarmal intersection for the convenience of commuters,” said another commuter.
