Commuters demand measures to prevent traffic jams

Srinagar, Mar 7: As the schools are opening in the summer capital from Friday, commuters have urged the authorities to ensure measures for smooth vehicular movement.

Officials said they carried out various drives to curb traffic violations across the city on Thursday and over the past few weeks to spread awareness and tackle traffic violations.

“In addition to traffic drives, the officials should also push to end traffic jams that we are facing on a daily basis. Since the start of Ramadhan, there has been a huge rush of vehicles during the evening, and most of the junctions are crippled with traffic jams. Now, as the schools are also opening, we will expect more jams, which needs more serious management,” said Shoaib Mir, a commuter.

SSP Traffic Srinagar City Muzaffar Ahmad Shah said that since November last year, they have intensified traffic drives to curb the issues like underage driving, over speeding and other issues. He said that they also carry drives to push for helmet-wearing habits for pillion riders.

“Now, as the schools are opening, we are expecting major increase in traffic volume. In view of Ramadhan, the traffic rush is huge during evening hours. So, we will push our every resource on the ground to ensure smooth traffic movement. The school timings and official timings are also clashing most of the time, and that is why we have to be well prepared, and commuters also need to follow traffic rules strictly,” he said. “We will ensure smooth vehicular movement,” the SSP added.
