Commuters decry inaction against speeding tippers in Srinagar
Srinagar, Dec 7: Commuters have expressed serious concern over the failure of authorities to take action against speeding tippers in the summer capital.
They said in the absence of checking points by Traffic police, tipper drivers have a free run to drive at a fast pace.
“Though Traffic police have launched a drive against two-wheelers and light motor vehicles, but it has turned a blind eye towards tippers which ply at a fast pace during evening and night hours,” said Abdul Hamid, a commuter.
Commuters said most of the tipper operators are using various tactics to hide number plates to escape in case of an accident.
The commuters said that amid rising accidents, there is a need to check over speeding by tippers.
“Amid ongoing drive launched by Traffic police to prevent underage driving, it is mandatory to check the movement of tippers during evening and night hours to prevent accidents,” said Abid Ahmad, a commuter.
Recently a video went viral on social media showing how illegal high beam lights were installed near number plates to keep them from detecting.
It also blocks the vision of commuters who are on the tail-end of these vehicles. This can cause major accidents,” said a commuter.
The commuters appealed to the Traffic authorities to act against traffic violators and to increase their drives against heavy vehicle operators.
SSP Traffic Police (Srinagar) Muzaffar Ahmad Shah has recently stated that they will intensify measures to combat all kinds of traffic violations. He said that the traffic police will ensure that neither LMVs nor heavy vehicles violate any rule.
We are striving towards safer roads in Srinagar, and we will take strict action against all violators. In coming days, more drives will be carried, and we will ensure to keep serious check on tippers and other heavy vehicle operators.”
