As the winters approach the demand for electricity in the valley and areas adjoining it, goes up. But the case has always been that the electricity generation takes a dip. So there is a significant mismatch between demand and supply.

This  has always resulted in power outages, scheduled and unscheduled. As a result the people in this region face enormous problems. This is not something that has anything to do with the situation that prevailed in J&K for last many years. It is not also something that happens suddenly and we are caught unawares.

It is a perennial problem and we are still not able to find a worthwhile solution to it. What is more problematic is the ever increasing dependence on electricity. We are now in an era where life is dependent on tech gadgets, and all those gadgets are electricity dependent. In such a scenario we should have enough electricity so that our lives remained smooth and hassle free. Unfortunately that is not the case and the dip in electricity supply causes disruption in every way possible.

What has added more to the problem is the recent phenomenon of many people working from home. As covid 19 hit the world the practice of working from home picked up in an amazing way. This time we have many young boys and girls working for different global companies in this mode. Not only that, there are local businesses that have engaged people in this manner. The prolonged power cuts in winters are a potential disruptor for such a scheme of things.

So it becomes all the more important to improve the power supply and also stick to some schedule in case of power cuts.  The concerned department needs to strain every nerve to ensure that there is least disturbance in the lives of the people on account of power outages.  Besides, we need to have a long term plan that addresses this problem in its totality. Now that we have solar technology revolutionising the energy scenario, it is time J&K benefits from that in a big way.
