Cold persists across Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 26: Sub-zero night temperatures continued across much of Kashmir on Friday, even as overcast skies brought a slight improvement in minimum temperatures at several places.

The Meteorological Department (MeT) forecast generally dry weather until December 28, followed by light rain in the plains and snow in the higher reaches around the New Year.

Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees Celsius, which is over two degrees higher than it was earlier this week, officials said.

However, several areas across Kashmir remained below freezing, underscoring the persistence of winter chill.

“Cloud cover has led to a marginal rise in night temperatures at many places, but cold conditions continue, especially in higher elevations,” a MeT official said.

Sonamarg tourist resort was the coldest place in the region at minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Gulmarg ski resort at minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, according to data compiled by the Kashmir Weather Service.

In south Kashmir, Pulwama recorded a low of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, while tourist destination Pahalgam settled at minus 1.6 degrees Celsius.

Shopian recorded minimum of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius and Kupwara minus 2.4 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag settled at 0.8 degrees Celsius.

Pampore also recorded minus 1.6 degrees Celsius.

In north Kashmir, Baramulla recorded minus 0.7 degrees Celsius, Bandipora 0.2 degrees Celsius, and Zethan Rafiabad minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Other areas, including Budgam, Anantnag, and Ganderbal, hovered just below freezing.

The Srinagar Airport recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, officials said.

The MeT said Kashmir is likely to remain dry until December 28.

“There is a possibility of light snow at isolated higher reaches on December 29,” the official said. “From December 30 to January 1, light rain is expected in the plains, with light snowfall in higher elevations.”

Residents have been advised to prepare for renewed cold and possible disruptions during the wet spell around New Year’s Eve.
