CM Omar clarifies stand on Reservation rationalisation, says final decision awaits LG approval
Srinagar, Oct 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that no final decision has yet been taken on the rationalisation of reservation categories in Jammu and Kashmir, clarifying that the matter is still under official consideration and awaiting approval from the Lieutenant Governor.
Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Omar said reports suggesting that changes had already been implemented were speculative.
“The Cabinet Sub-Committee’s report has been accepted by the Cabinet, and the concerned department has been directed to prepare a detailed memo. That document will then go to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval. Until that happens, it is premature to comment on what the final shape of the reservation policy will be,” he said.
“It is incorrect to spread misinformation or create unnecessary anxiety among different categories. The process is administrative and must follow due procedure. Once the Lieutenant Governor signs off on it, the details will be made public,” he said.
Responding to questions on whether the government was planning to merge or alter categories within the reservation structure, Omar refrained from giving specifics. “We will wait for the official notification. The idea is to ensure that the reservation system remains fair, balanced, and reflective of ground realities,” he said.
“Any reform must ensure that no group feels excluded or deprived. Our focus remains on equitable opportunities in education and employment,” he added.
Omar said that until then, it would be inappropriate for anyone to claim that the government had taken a definitive stance. “Let the official process conclude. Once the LG signs the proposal, we will share the details transparently,” he said.
