CM demands transparent probe into torture allegations of civilians by Army in Kishtwar

Srinagar, Nov 22: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday called for a transparent investigation into the alleged torture of five civilians by Army personnel in Kishtwar, demanding strict action against those found responsible.

The incident unfolded on November 20 when Army operations in the Mughal Maidan area led to disturbing allegations of civilian mistreatment.

Graphic footage circulating online showed the victims with visible injuries, struggling to walk.

“If there is evidence against the soldiers involved, they should be court-martialed and punished,” the CM told reporters, emphasising the need for accountability.

Reflecting on the repeated nature of such incidents, he expressed deep concern.

“Unfortunately, our people have not learned anything from the past,” CM Omar said, recalling previous cases of civilian torture.

The Army’s 15 Corps acknowledged the allegations, saying, “An investigation is being launched to ascertain the facts. Necessary follow-up action will be ensured.”

The CM drew parallels with previous tragic incidents, saying, “This is not the first such incident when people have been called to camps and beaten. I thank God that none of them have lost their precious lives.”

The allegations revive memories of a similar tragic event last year in Poonch, where three youth lost their lives after alleged brutal torture.
