Srinagar, Aug 30: The Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament 2024, held at Polo View Hockey Stadium, Srinagar, concluded with an exhilarating final match on 29 Aug 2024. Chinar Strikers emerged victorious, defeating Baramulla with a narrow 1-0 score.

The tournament, which began on August 19, was organised by Headquarters 31 Sub Area of Chinar Corps in collaboration with J&K Sports Council and Hockey J&K. It commemorated National Sports Day, celebrated annually on 29 August in honour of Major Dhyan Chand, India’s legendary field hockey player.

Twelve teams from 10 Kashmir Valley districts participated in this second edition of the tournament, which featured a league format. The event included 12 league matches and two semi-finals leading up to the final.

Notable performances were recognized during the tournament. Ramandeep from Baramulla was awarded ‘Man of the Match’ for his outstanding performance in the final. Muneer from Shopian earned the title of ‘Best Goalkeeper’ for his solid defence at the goalpost, while Kamal from Chinar Strikers was adjudged ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his exceptional performance throughout the event.

To promote women’s hockey, an exhibition match between Baramulla and Srinagar teams preceded the finals. The Liberty Group supported the event by providing hockey shoes and bags to players.

The final match was graced by the GOC Chinar Corps as Chief Guest, alongside GOC 31 Sub Area. Padma Shri awardee Pargat Singh, former Indian Hockey Team Captain, attended as a Special Guest.

This tournament not only showcased local talent but also contributed to the promotion of hockey in the Kashmir Valley, aligning with the spirit of National Sports Day celebrations.
