Chinar Bagh loses sheen due to lack of maintenance
Srinagar, Feb 13: Once one of the major parks in Srinagar, Chinar Bagh, situated on the banks of Chuntkul, has lost its sheen due to lack of basic amenities and maintenance.
Chinar Bagh popularly known as Boune Bagh was a favourite spot for tourists especially foreigners till late 80s. However, the park was gradually encroached upon in absence of regulation. In 2010, the Government redeveloped Chinar Bagh to showcase local culture and traditions. Besides, fountains and swings were installed as an added attraction.
Chinar Bagh was extensively damaged during the devastating floods in 2014. Locals said that for over a decade, the park has not been properly maintained. In absence of maintenance, a thick layer of grass has overwhelmed the park.
"The Chinar Bagh has lost its glory due to neglect by authorities and unscrupulous persons," said Imran Ahmad, a local.
In absence of management, visitors and morning walkers face inconvenience. "There is no watch and ward in the park. A portion of the park is a safe haven for drug addicts and the other side has been occupied by stray dogs. The beautiful place has been turned into the city's ugliest spot," said Abdul Hamid, a frequent visitor to the park.
Chinar Bagh was a favourite haunt of the British till 1947. Subsequently, Chinar Bagh, comprising eight islands, became one of the major camping sites and fishing spots for tourists including foreigners. To showcase crystal clear water of Chuntkul’s, an outflow channel of Dal Lake, the India Council of Cultural Relations had organised a camp for students of 25 countries in the 1960s. Owing to the natural beauty of Chuntkul and Chinar Bagh, the Government used to encourage tourism and cultural promotional activities in Chuntkul. "Ironically, the Chinar Bagh and Chuntkul canal was neglected and gradually its condition deteriorated," Mehrajuddin, a visitor said.
"Government must take measures to restore the glory of Chinar Bagh given its historical and ecological importance," he added.
