Kashmir faces some major environmental challenges, like Deforestation, Water Pollution, Climate Change, Urbanization and Population Growth, Waste Management, and Political Instability.

World Environment Day has been celebrated in Kashmir for many years. Initially, it involved only a few government agencies and NGOs. Over time, awareness has grown, and now many groups participate in the celebrations, including schools, community organizations, and the general public.

Some of the organisations that conduct major functions on the day are:

1. Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board (JKPCB): This government agency leads efforts to reduce pollution and promote sustainable practices through activities like tree planting and clean-up campaigns.
2. Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing: This department focuses on environmental monitoring, research, and policy development. They work with schools and NGOs to raise awareness and implement conservation projects.
3. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Many local and international NGOs are active in Kashmir, working on various environmental issues. These organizations help mobilize communities, provide education, and carry out projects.
4. Educational Institutions: Schools, colleges, and universities play a major role by organizing events like debates, art competitions, and awareness campaigns.

SAVE DAL LAKE PROJECT

The Save Dal Lake Project aims to restore the lake’s health by cleaning up the water, regulating waste from houseboats, and promoting eco-friendly tourism. This project has reduced pollution levels and helped revive aquatic life in the lake.

WULAR LAKE CONSERVATION

Wular Lake, one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, is also threatened by pollution and habitat loss. The Wular Lake Conservation and Management Project works to restore the lake’s ecosystem through activities like removing invasive plants, replanting native species, and educating local fishermen about sustainable practices. This collaborative effort involves the government, local communities, and international organizations.

Local communities in Kashmir are leading various conservation projects. One successful initiative is the revival of traditional water harvesting systems called “Kuls” in the Ladakh region.
