Ceasefire violations continue in Akhnoor for 3rd day
Jammu, May 1: For the third consecutive day, the Pakistan Army Thursday violated the ceasefire by resorting to unprovoked small-arms firing across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Akhnoor sector in the Jammu region.
The Indian Army is stated to have retaliated in equal measure.
On Wednesday night, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across the LoC opposite Akhnoor. These were responded proportionately by the Indian Army, PRO Defence Jammu, Lt Col Suneel Bartwal said.
On Tuesday night, Pakistan Army posts had resorted to unprovoked small-arms fire across the LoC opposite the Nowshera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor sectors and across the International Border (IB) in the Pargwal sector of Jammu region.
Similar exchanges of fire between the two sides took place on Sunday night along the LoC across areas opposite the Poonch district and on Monday night in the Akhnoor sector.
According to Lt Col Bartwal, the Indian Army responded to the provocation in a measured and effective manner.
Meanwhile, the last rites of an Army soldier Sepoy Harish Singh of 18 Dogra Rifles, who was killed in an avalanche while guarding a border post in the Kargil sector, were performed on Thursday with full military honours in his native village Jandore in Kathua district.
Earlier, senior officers of the Army, Police, civil administration and local leaders paid tributes to the Army soldier during a wreath-laying ceremony.
