CCPA discusses warranty start date reform with electronics manufacturers
New Delhi, June 22: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) recently convened a meeting with major electronic appliance manufacturers to address the issue of warranty periods commencing from the date of purchase rather than installation. This practice often results in a reduced effective warranty period for consumers, who can only use the product after installation.
Chaired by Nidhi Khare, Chief Commissioner of CCPA, the meeting was attended by representatives from leading companies including Reliance Retail, LG, Panasonic, Haier, Croma, and Bosch. Chief Commissioner Khare emphasized the need for clear communication to consumers about warranty start dates, adherence to global best practices in India, and prompt addressing of consumer grievances related to warranty periods.
The discussion centered on two categories of electronic appliances: 'plug-n-play' products and those requiring installation. The feasibility of using the installation date as the warranty start date was explored, along with measures to prevent potential abuse of this system.
This initiative aligns with consumer rights as defined under Section 2(9) of the Consumer Protection Act, which includes the right to be informed about product details to protect against unfair trade practices.
Manufacturers generally agreed to address the issue proactively, considering consumer interests. They were requested to submit their views within 15 days. The CCPA's effort aims to ensure that consumers receive the full benefit of their product warranties, potentially setting a new standard in consumer protection for electronic appliances in India.
