Srinagar, Mar 20: The Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kashmir (CCIK) has strongly denounced the actions of Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) in disconnecting consumers' electricity connections during the holy month of Ramadhan for non-payment of bills.

In a statement issued today, CCIK President Tariq Rashid Ghani expressed deep concern over the timing of these actions, calling them "insensitive".

"The disconnection of power supply during the sacred month of Ramadhan is not only unfortunate but also shows a complete lack of understanding of the economic realities of Kashmir," said Ghani.

"KPDCL must adopt a more lenient approach toward consumers, recognising that winter months significantly impact business operations and revenue streams."

The chamber highlighted that many businesses struggle with cash flow during winter due to reduced economic activity, making it difficult to clear pending dues immediately. Furthermore, the disconnections have severely affected domestic consumers who rely on electricity for pre-dawn 'Sehri' meals and other essential religious practices during Ramadan.

CCIK has appealed for the immediate intervention of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir to address this pressing issue. The chamber has proposed several measures for consideration:

"While we acknowledge that KPDCL needs to ensure revenue collection, we believe there are more compassionate approaches that can be implemented, particularly during religiously significant periods," Ghani stated.

"We urge authorities to differentiate between those who genuinely cannot pay due to financial constraints and willful defaulters who have the means but choose not to pay."
