Cash, drugs, liquor worth Rs 5.71 crore intended to be given as freebies seized in 12 days
Srinagar, Aug 29: In the 12-days since the implementation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) across J&K ahead of Assembly elections, the authorities say they have seized 5.71 crore worth of cash and other material including drugs and liquor.
The cash and other items, the authorities said, were meant to be given as freebies to influence voters during the upcoming polls.
"From the date of announcement of General Election to Legislative Assembly of J&K by Election Commission of India, Rs 5.71 crores worth drugs, cash and liquor have been seized by various enforcement agencies in J&K UT in first 12 days of enforcement of Model Code of Conduct”, a statement from the office of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer said.
The Election Department appreciated the efforts made by the enforcement agencies to ensure free and fair Assembly elections across the UT, news agency GNS reported.
