Jammu, Jan 23: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakina Itoo Thursday stated that the call to shift the patients to PGI would have to be taken by the doctors only and none else.

She stated this while responding to media queries after her visit to SMGS and GMC hospitals in Jammu. When asked about the allegations of MLA Budhal against GMC doctors, in particular GMC Principal and the Centre, the Health Minister stated, “See, there is no need to create panic on this issue. These are health issues. We cannot ask forcibly to shift the patients. This is a call which has to be taken by the Health department or doctors only, if they (doctors) feel so.”

She said that J&K too was having very efficient and talented doctors. “They (doctors) are hard-working. They have done their duties honestly and diligently. 3500 people have been checked and screened. If at any stage, they feel it is necessary to shift any child or elderly to PGI, Chandigarh to save their life, we will definitely do so. There is no hitch on this account. No stone will be left unturned by the Government to do what is necessary to save the precious life of our people,” Itoo said.

“However, this will be done if the Health department and doctors feel it is imperative. This will have to be decided by the doctors only. Sakina Itoo will not decide at her own level as the Health Minister, this will be decided by the doctors as to what immediate steps we have to take. What if the situation of a serious patient, God forbid, further deteriorates, on the way while shifting,” she stated. The Health Minister stated that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was taking an update about the situation after every half-an-hour.

“The Chief Minister himself takes an update about it (Badhaal situation and patients’ well-being) after every half-an-hour. I believe he (CM) would have convened around 40 or so meetings on this issue to deliberate all aspects. For all of us also, this is a baffling scenario, where we are not able to get to the real cause behind it (deaths),” Itoo stated.

“Nevertheless, we are with all the bereaved families. We understand their agony. We well comprehend the trials and tribulations they are passing through. Entire health department and the government too are as disturbed over these developments as they (affected) families are,” she said.
