BROKEN PROMISES: Buran Pattan residents demand recreational space over industrial estate
Baramulla, Apr 6: Residents of Buran Pattan in north Kashmir's Baramulla district have voiced serious concerns over authorities' fresh move to allocate state land for industrial purposes—land they say was previously promised for a much-needed playground.
Grappling with limited public spaces and a growing population, locals are disheartened by what they view as a broken commitment. Instead of developing recreational facilities, the government is now planning to convert the land into an industrial estate.
"We don't even have a single playground in this area," said Muhammad Ashraf, a local resident. "The only available open land was this one, and we were promised it would be developed into a sports ground. Now, they're turning their backs on that promise. It's unfair to the youth who have no place to engage in sports activities."
The Buran area has already sacrificed substantial land for the construction of a bypass road. With fewer open spaces remaining, residents argue that what's left should be reserved for community projects like playgrounds, schools, or healthcare centres.
Syed Abrar, a local political figure who recently contested assembly elections, expressed disappointment: "This is a residential area, not an industrial zone. I fail to understand how authorities can even consider establishing industrial units here. The decision not only disregards earlier assurances but also ignores the basic needs of the local population."
Abrar emphasised the need for government to consult the public before making decisions that directly impact their daily lives. "The youth of Buran Pattan are enthusiastic and eager to showcase their talent in sports. Denying them a playground is like crushing their hopes and opportunities," he added.
Residents have urged the administration to reverse the proposed plan, demanding the land be used for a playground, school, or healthcare facility—amenities they believe would truly serve this growing residential locality.
"We appeal to the administration to honor their original commitment," said Ashraf. "This land should benefit the people, especially the youth, not be turned into an industrial zone that serves no local purpose."
When contacted, MLA Pattan Javed Riyaz Bedar said the issue has been taken up with concerned authorities. "We are hopeful that people's concerns will be given priority," he stated.
Bedar noted that the area has approximately 174 kanals of state land. "A major portion of the land will be used for the playground as per people's aspirations," he said. "The playground and a school will be established on the said land. It's a huge tract and will be used for multiple purposes."
