BRO gears up for aftermath of Western disturbances in J&K
Srinagar, Dec 29: The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is all prepared to handle the challenges posed by two back-to-back Western disturbances expected to affect J&K and have deployed additional men and machinery to tackle the situation.
The upcoming Western disturbances are expected to bring significant snowfall to the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department has predicted moderate to heavy snowfall in several areas, which could lead to disruptions in transportation.
BRO officials stated that they are monitoring weather forecasts closely and have increased manpower and machinery at strategic locations.
“In case of any weather condition, we are ready to tackle the situation. Our teams and equipment are in place to ensure minimal disruption to vital road links, ”Chief Engineer of BRO told Greater Kashmir.
Several important routes, including Srinagar-Baramulla, Baramulla-Kupwara, and Sonamarg-Kargil roads, fall under BRO's responsibility. These roads are essential for maintaining connectivity in Kashmir, particularly during the harsh winter months.
The BRO’s readiness was evident during the recent snowfall when the organisation cleared the Srinagar-Baramulla road overnight, ensuring uninterrupted movement for traffic. “Despite challenging weather conditions, our men worked round the clock to ensure the Srinagar-Baramulla road was operational by morning,” the Chief Engineer said.
Efforts are also underway to clear the Zojila Pass, a critical route connecting Sonamarg to Kargil. “Our men and machinery are working tirelessly to clear the Zojila road. We are utilising all available resources to ensure it remains navigable,” he added.
The Chief Engineer said that the BRO is well-equipped to handle even the most adverse conditions. “Our priority is to ensure that no area remains cut off for long. We have deployed additional teams at critical points, and all necessary precautions are being taken,” he said.
“Our teams are well-trained and experienced in dealing with such situations. We are confident in our ability to tackle any challenges that come our way,” the Chief Engineer said.
The BRO has urged the public to stay informed about weather updates and travel advisories.
Pertinently, BRO in October has officially taken charge of the Mughal Road, a vital transport link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu. This strategic move is expected to enhance the management and maintenance of the route, which serves as a crucial alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
