BOSE: Job Well Done
The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) made a mark in terms of efficiency, on April 30, 2025, by declaring the results of the Class 10 and Class 12 examinations simultaneously; this is for the first time since its inception.
The result was declared in a time bound manner soon after the culmination of the exams of both the classes.
Before the formal declaration of the result, the statement of JKBOSE officials that they will try to declare the result of both the classes on the same day, took everybody by surprise as it was something unbelievable but not impossible as proved by the authorities at JKBOSE.
Without any ifs or buts, the authorities proved that even JKBOSE can perform exceptionally or surpass expectations if driven by strong willpower.
If we recall the past incidents, the JKBOSE kept its standards always at least from 2014 to early 2023.
We all remember how hard JKBOSE worked post 2014 floods by conducting exams and ensuring timely declaration of the results as well. JKBOSE consistently maintained high standards while simultaneously raising the bar of expectations among stakeholders.
The JKBOSE has worked and even delivered, during tough times as well.
How can one forget the challenges JKBOSE faced during the 2016 unrest when the schools and colleges remained closed for around five months. Even if the students were given relaxation in the syllabus but there was no relaxation for JKBOSE at all. The number of students and the deadline to declare the results did not change. And JKBOSE did not disappoint that time as well. The officials at the helm of affairs ensured that the results are declared in a time bound manner.
While the academic sessions of 2017 and 2018 posed no significant challenges for JKBOSE, the 2019 session proved to be a real test.
With the abrogation of Article 370 leading to an internet clampdown in the Valley, the Board had to conduct examinations and declare results during the harsh winter of 2020 without any communication facilities.
Yet, without offering any excuses, JKBOSE rose to the occasion and declared the results for classes 10, 11, and 12 students.
The same level of consistency was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when JKBOSE once again delivered its best.
However, over the past two years, JKBOSE has faced intense public criticism for its anti-student policies that triggered chaos across the Valley.
During the last two years, JKBOSE faced criticism over inordinate delay in distribution of textbooks while it also hit headlines for creating hurdles for students, of a few schools, in appearing in the Board exams. Such decisions invited massive criticism for JKBOSE.
Not only this, various JKBOSE affiliated private schools started shifting their affiliations with other boards, particularly CBSE. Some of the schools have already done it.
The recent change in top brass at JKBOSE has rekindled the hopes and expectations of both stakeholders and students.
The timely declaration of the 10th and 12th class results has once again set a higher benchmark for the board’s performance and standards.
The JKBOSE on April 30 declared the result of the annual class 10th regular annual (2025) examination with an overall pass percentage of 79.94 percent.
As per the official figures produced by JKBOSE a total of 145671 students - Boys 75427 and Girls - 70244 had enrolled for the class 10th annual examination out of which 116453 students have qualified it.
The pass percentage of government schools was registered as 71.80 as out of 88983 students who appeared in the exam, 63887 qualified it while out of 56688 students from private schools, 52566 qualified it.
Similarly in class 12th, the government schools registered 72.82 percent pass rate as out of 84749 students 61715 qualified it. The pass rate of private schools is 84.03 percent as out of 18559 students, 15596 qualified it.
Now coming to the point, the declaration of results of both the classes is indeed a good show by the JKBOSE.
Earlier, the education minister set a deadline for the Board to declare the result of class 10th and 12th, and without any excuses, the JKBOSE met the deadline and declared the result in a time bound manner.
The JKBOSE doubled the number of evaluators and hired services of private network service providers to ensure that there was no technical glitch in the website while it hosts the result of both classes on the same day.
On the day of result, JKBOSE proved that when any initiative is driven by will power, excuses take a back seat and can set the rhythm for further improvements.
Now that JKBOSE created history and changed public perception about the functioning of the institution, there is still a lot more to be done to attain perfection.
To cite some examples, the JKBOSE has to make changes in the process of reevaluation which, as of now, is a time consuming process and puts students to unnecessary trouble.
It has been also observed that the result of dozens of students improves after reevaluation of their answer scripts and are later declared as qualified candidates.
For this JKBOSE should adopt a refund policy wherein the students should be given a refund of their fees they pay for reevaluation of their subjects.
The same money should be instead charged from the evaluator as fine, whose wrong evaluation put students to unnecessary troubles.
Since the JKBOSE has made a good comeback by hosting the results of 248979 students-(145671 10th) and (103308 12th) on a single day, the same commitment is expected from JKBOSE in other affairs as well.
One of the important factors is timely distribution of textbooks to schools which, however, is never done on time. JKBOSE has now set new standards and hopes are high that the same commitment will be shown for timely distribution of textbooks.
To conclude, the team of officers and the officials of the Board deserve applaude for setting new records by declaring the results of 2.48 lakh students on a single day. Hopes are high that JKBOSE works with the same zeal and zest in future as well because JKBOSE has proved that excuses take a back seat when decisions are taken out of willpower.
