New Delhi, Jul 24: Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated sharply on Thursday as deadly clashes erupted along a disputed stretch of their shared border, leaving at least 12 Thai nationals, mostly civilians, dead. Both countries have accused each other of violating ceasefire agreements and using heavy weaponry.

Cambodian troops allegedly launched rocket attacks into Thai territory, targeting a village and a hospital. In response, Thailand is reported to have carried out airstrikes on Cambodian military installations. Amid the violence, Thailand closed its entire border with Cambodia and urged its citizens to evacuate. Cambodia has downgraded diplomatic relations with Bangkok, accusing Thailand of using excessive force.

In the wake of the fighting, Thailand’s education ministry announced the closure of 582 schools across Surin, Sisaket, and Buriram provinces after rockets landed in residential areas. Meanwhile, surveillance drones and troops carrying rocket-propelled grenades were reported near the border early Thursday, followed by an exchange of fire between the two sides.

Thailand has accused Cambodia of deploying BM-21 rocket launchers and artillery that damaged civilian infrastructure. Cambodia claims the conflict began after Thai forces advanced on a Khmer-Hindu temple, set up barbed wire, and later opened fire. Cambodian authorities say they responded in self-defence after being targeted by Thai troops and air strikes. Regional concern has mounted. Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair, is engaging with both countries in an attempt to defuse the crisis. China has also expressed deep concern, calling on both nations to resolve their differences through dialogue and offering to play a constructive role in easing tensions.
