BIS J&K conducts capacity capacity-building programme for cement industry professionals

Srinagar, June 19: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office (JKBO), successfully conducted a two-day capsule course for quality control personnel (QCPs) from the cement industry on June 18–19 at Hotel Four Points by Sheraton, Srinagar.

A statement issued here said that the programme brought together technical staff and QCPs from all major cement manufacturing units operating across Kashmir. In addition, six research scholars from the BIS Students Chapter at the Civil Engineering Department of NIT Srinagar participated and presented on recent developments in cement standards.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Tilak Raj, Director and Head of BIS JKBO, who underscored the importance of capacity building in fortifying India’s quality infrastructure. He said the course was designed to provide participants with insights into product specifications, sampling procedures, testing methods, and digital tools like the BIS e-portals for managing ISI mark certification processes.

Following the opening session, Pankaj Atri, Joint Director, BIS JKBO, delivered a detailed technical presentation on cement classification, manufacturing processes, and key checkpoints in quality control. He also demonstrated the use of digital platforms such as the BIS Know Your Standards portal and the BIS Care mobile app, helping participants better understand BIS’s Conformity Assessment Schemes.

Attendees engaged in hands-on learning through live demonstrations of both chemical and physical testing techniques, deepening their practical understanding of cement quality assurance.
