BIS J&K Branch organises hallmarking awareness programme in Sopore
Sopore, Oct 13: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jammu and Kashmir branch office organised an awareness programme on hallmarking of gold and silver jewellery in collaboration with the Gold and Silver Association Sopore, which is affiliated with the All J&K Gold Dealers and Workers Association, Srinagar.
The event, held in Sopore town, witnessed active participation from a large number of gold and silver dealers, jewellers, and artisans from across the town. The main objective of the programme was to educate traders and customers about the importance of hallmarking, BIS certification, and the legal standards that ensure the purity and authenticity of precious metals.
Officials from the BIS team gave a detailed presentation on various aspects of hallmarking, including the identification of BIS marks, the rights of consumers, and the responsibilities of jewellers under the BIS Act. They also addressed several queries raised by local traders regarding the process of registration, renewal, and inspection of hallmarking centres.
Speaking on the occasion, President of the Gold and Silver Association Sopore, Haji Firdous Ahmad Khan, extended a warm welcome to the BIS team and expressed his gratitude for conducting such an informative and beneficial session. He emphasised that such awareness programmes play a vital role in protecting consumer interests and helping jewellers maintain trust and transparency in business.
The association members also requested the BIS authorities to hold such awareness events frequently in different parts of north Kashmir to ensure that every gold and silver dealer remains informed about the latest hallmarking rules and regulations. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to the BIS officials for their valuable guidance and efforts to strengthen quality assurance practices in the jewellery trade.
