Bemina flyover to be thrown open by June 23

Srinagar, June 12: The long-awaited Bemina flyover, is set to be thrown open for vehicular movement by June 23, bringing relief to commuters on the Bypass.

The flyover, spanning around 900 meters and costing an estimated Rs 96.97 crore, is designed to decongest traffic in the area and enhance vehicular movement.

Sajad Ahmad, Chief Engineer of the Roads and Building Department (R&B) told Greater Kashmir that the flyover will be thrown open to the public by June 23.

He said they have completed the Parimpora approach side of the flyover, but macadamisation on some stretch towards Hyderpora side will be completed soon.

“Once the flyover becomes operational, it is expected to alleviate the traffic congestion at the Bemina junction, which has been a long-standing issue for commuters and residents alike,” he said.

While the Bemina flyover is nearing completion, similar flyover projects at Nowgam and Sanat Nagar junctions are still under construction. These projects are part of a larger plan to upgrade Srinagar's road network and address the increasing traffic challenges in the city.

However, the ongoing construction has caused significant inconveniences. Residents and commuters have faced a traffic mess, and the roads near the flyover are in disrepair, causing immense hardships. The dust from the construction has led to severe respiratory problems among locals.

Rahil Ahmad, a local shopkeeper said that the opening of the flyover will bring relief for residents and commuters. "The construction period has been a nightmare for us due to endless traffic jams and customers avoiding the area due to congestion, affecting my business," he said.

A daily commuter shared his struggle with commuting during the construction phase, stating, "The detours and traffic added at least an hour to my daily travel time to the city center. The opening of the flyover will be a significant relief."

Earlier, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, had said that both the Bemina and Sanat Nagar flyovers would be dedicated to the public by mid-2024, indicating that the authorities are closely monitoring the progress and prioritizing the completion of these crucial infrastructure projects.
