Baramulla, Jan 14: The rise in social crimes seems to be a new challenge for the police as the official statistics reveal disturbing statistics in terms of different crimes taking place in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

As per the official statistics, around 299 cases of suicide attempts have been registered by Baramulla Police headquarter besides 258 cases pertaining to the kidnapping between 2019 to 2024. The details have been furnished by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Headquarters Baramulla in response to the RTI application filed by M M Shuja.

As per the official figures, the Baramulla Police have registered 110 cases pertaining to rape while 14 murder cases have been registered between 2019 to 2024. The Baramulla Police have made 53 arrests in cases related to murders, kidnapping and rape cases.

As per the official data, the dowry related violence has become a persistent issue as the Police have registered 206 cases on account of dowry harassment while the Baramulla Police have arrested 371 persons under relevant laws in connection with the dowry related cases.

A top police official said the societal issues like harassment for dowry besides attempts made in other crimes was adding burden on the Police.

"But we are always at forefront to help the public to combat such crimes. Anytime we receive any information, we register the cases and ensure that action is taken in all crime related cases so that the society remains without any fear of criminals," the official said.

As already reported, the J&K Police has been holding various seminars and other awareness campaigns for the public to report the information about the crime cases so that the people indulging in such activities are dealt strictly as per the law.
