Baramulla police to act strictly against use of social media for anti-national activities

Baramulla, Dec 7: Baramulla police on Thursday warned to act strictly against those becoming tools of separatist organisations by sharing their messages or videos on social media aimed to promote terrorism, secessionism and communal disharmony.

The senior superintendent of police Baramulla, Amod Ashok Nagpure on Thursday asked people to refrain from sharing any such content on social media, digital platforms, aimed to glorify terrorists and propagate their secessionist agenda.

“Those found involved will be dealt with strictly under the law,” said SSP Baramulla.

He said police have taken all measures to initiate crackdown on all those elements becoming tools of separatists nefarious designs by sharing their content, information, video on the digital platforms
thus acting as a catalyst in spreading their separatist agenda.

He also urged the parents to keep an eye on their wards in order to ascertain what type of content they are using on the digital platform. “Parents need to be alert and ensure that their wards don’t use social media for separatist activities. The misuse can be sharing the content of terrorists and their messages,” he said.

He urged people that in case they unintentionally receive any terrorist organization’s message or any content they should approach the nearest police station so that they don’t face action from the police.

“If anyone receives any content from the separatist organisations, terrorists, they should immediately approach the nearest police station with that content and information. Hiding such information will warrant strict action as per law,” he added.

Notably, the Baramulla district magistrate recently issued an order vide no 23/DMB/2023 under section 144 CRPC 1973, prohibiting posting, uploading, or propagation of messages and content glorifying terrorists and their actions, intimidating individuals or the general public, inciting violence, and propagating terrorist and secessionist ideologies.

Expressing concern over the misuse of social media platforms, the District Magistrate highlighted the nefarious activities of some anti-national persons or groups aiming to disturb public tranquility, jeopardising state security, and impeding the lawful duties of citizens and public functionaries.

The measures outlined in the order are in response to identified actions that, if left unchecked, could have severe implications on the security of the state and the maintenance of law and order.

The order specifically targets those who exploit social media networks to spread false narratives, incite violence, and promote ideologies detrimental to the well-being of society.

The district magistrate Baramulla, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar urged the general public to comply with the order and refrain from engaging in activities that could contribute to the propagation of anti-national content. The order empowers law enforcement agencies to take necessary actions against individuals or groups found violating the prohibition.
