Baramulla Police register 681 NDPS cases, arrest 993 persons in 5 years
Baramulla, Jan 21: In a major crackdown on the menace of the substance by the Baramulla Police, the authorities have been able to register 681 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases against the drug peddlers besides arresting as many as 993 persons in these cases.
During the last five years, Baramulla Police tightened a noose against the drug peddlers and launched an operation all out campaign in the district some two years ago to curb the menace of the drug abuse from the district.
As per the official figures of Baramulla Police, the crackdown on drug peddlers has produced major success in the last five years. Around 30 NDPS cases were registered by the Baramulla Police in 2019 and 43 accused were arrested in the same year.
The official figures have been released by the Baramulla Police headquarters in response to an RTI application submitted by M M Shuja. With its relentless efforts, the Baramulla Police have achieved a success in eradicating the menace by registering more cases under NDPS besides enhanced the crackdown on the drugs peddlers which resulted in more arrests with each passing year.
In 2020, Baramulla Police, after launching its effective campaign against drugs have registered 55 NDPS cases and arrested 82 accused as well. The number of NDPS cases registered by Baramulla Police has further increased to 93 in 2021 while 150 persons were arrested as well. The figures suggest the major achievement by Baramulla Police in curbing the menace of substance abuse in the district through various initiatives.
In 2022, around 92 NDPS cases were registered and 127 were arrested in drug peddling cases. The effective measures and the crackdown launched by the Baramulla Police against the menace has resulted in major success in 2023 as 266 NDPS cases were registered while 389 persons were arrested by the Police who were found involving in drug peddling.
While the figures reveal alarming situation with regard to the involvement of people in drug peddling cases, but the effective measures taken by Police have resulted in bringing the graph of drug peddlers down as well.
In 2024, Baramulla Police registered 145 NDPS cases and arrested 202 persons as well. An official said that besides launching massive crackdown against the drug peddling, reports are still received from different nooks and corners about the activities of some drug peddlers.
"Almost every day, a drug peddler is intercepted during check points set up at specific locations. In the last two years, Baramulla Police received a massive support from the general public in eradicating substance abuse from the district," an official said. He said they frequently receive inputs from the public as and when they notice any movement of drug peddlers. "With collective support of the public, we have been able to identify the drug peddlers and arrest them as well," the official said.
Besides the menace of drug peddling, the Baramulla Police is also facing a challenge of other crimes like thefts as 925 burglary cases have been registered by Baramulla Police in the last five years. Besides the issue of drug peddling, Baramulla has witnessed a surge in burglary cases in the last five years as well.
