Baramulla, Oct 19: In an effort to address ongoing traffic congestion and improve pedestrian movement in Baramulla town, the Baramulla police, led by Station House Officer (SHO) Muhammad Rafiq Lone, initiated a major drive on Saturday to clear footpaths and roads of encroachers and roadside vendors.

The police team targeted key areas of the town, including Main Chowk, Tehsil Point, the vegetable market, and the Baramulla bus stand. These locations have long been affected by the proliferation of unauthorized street vendors, which often leads to significant disruptions in pedestrian movement and contributes to traffic jams.

Local resident Muhammad Arshad Bhat expressed his frustration with the persistent traffic chaos in the town, noting that, in addition to street vendors, illegal car parking is another major issue. Many vehicle owners park on the roads despite the availability of designated parking at Noor-ul-Huda market.

“Despite the presence of a parking facility, many people continue to park their vehicles on the roads, causing further problems for pedestrians and drivers alike. Authorities should take strict action and seize all vehicles parked illegally on the road,” Bhat urged.

Residents have also raised concerns about shopkeepers placing their merchandise on pavements, further obstructing footpaths meant for pedestrians. This practice has become commonplace, adding to the hardships faced by local residents as pavements become impassable.

Another local, Irshad Ahmad, criticized the Baramulla Municipal Council for failing to act on its earlier order aimed at resolving the issue of street vendors. “A year ago, the municipal council identified a space at Chicken Bazar for street vendors and issued an order directing them to relocate within two months. The authorities promised strict action against violators. However, despite the passage of time, nothing has been done, and the problem continues unchecked,” Ahmad said.

Residents of Baramulla are now calling on the district administration to ensure that the crackdown on encroachers and illegal parking remains an ongoing effort.

They emphasised that such drives are essential to maintain order and address the difficulties faced by the general public, particularly pedestrians.
