Baramulla, Jan 03: The Baramulla Police on Friday said it arrested four individuals involved in smuggling of illegal timber and drug peddling in the district.

As per the Police handout, Baramulla Police intercepted a Tata 207 vehicle carrying nine timber logs at Drung Crossing during naka checking.

"Upon inspection, it was revealed that the vehicle was transporting timber without the necessary permissions. The vehicle and illicit timber has been seized," the handout reads.

The Police said three individuals involved in the act were arrested on the spot and have been identified as Mehraj Ahmad Khan, son of Abdul Majeed Khan from Nowgam Khag, Mohammed Amin Lone son of Abdul Gaffar Lone of Drung and Owais Ahmad Parrey son of Abdul Ahad Parrey from Soibugh Budgam.

"A case has been registered by Baramulla Police under FIR No. 01/2025, invoking Section 26 of the Forest Act and Sections 303 and 329(1) of the Indian Penal Code in PS Tangmarg," the Police in an official handout said.

"Investigations are underway to determine the source and intended destination of the illegal timber," the handout reads.

Meanwhile, the Baramulla Police also arrested a drug peddler and recovered contraband substance from his possession.

The drug peddler was apprehended after a Police party headed by SHO Police Station Uri established at checkpoint at Paranpeelan-Bandi Crossing Uri.

"During the checking one person identified as Mohammad d Showkat Awan son of Atta Mohammad resident of Dawaran was intercepted. During his search, 1.700 kgs of contraband Cannabis powder like substances was recovered from his possession," the Police handout reads.

Police have arrested the accused and a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Uri while investigation has been initiated.
