Barack Obama endorses Kamala Harris as Democratic Presidential nominee
New Delhi, July 26: Former President Barack Obama has officially endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee, ending days of speculation about his support.
In a joint statement with his wife, Michelle Obama, the former president expressed their belief in Harris’s capabilities, stating she has the “vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands.”
This endorsement follows President Joe Biden’s announcement last Sunday that he would not be running for re-election. Kamala Harris reportedly reached out to over 100 prominent Democrats, including Obama, after Biden’s decision. While Obama had praised Biden’s exit, he had initially stopped short of endorsing Harris.
With the backing of a majority of Democratic delegates, Harris is set to become the official nominee at the party convention in August. The Obamas’ endorsement on Friday was accompanied by a statement expressing their excitement and commitment to supporting Harris’s campaign. “We agree with President Biden,” the statement read, “choosing Kamala was one of the best decisions he’s made. She has the resume to prove it.”
The statement highlighted her resume. “She has the vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands. There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people. At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives us all reason to hope.”
The statement was accompanied by a video showing Harris receiving a phone call from the Obamas, during which they pledged their support. “Oh my goodness,” Harris exclaimed in the clip. “Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me.”
Since Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris has held several campaign events across the United States.
Meanwhile, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has intensified his attacks on Harris. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, he referred to her as a “radical left Marxist, and worse!” He also refused to commit to a televised debate with Harris until she is officially confirmed as the party’s nominee, suggesting that Democrats might still be considering other candidates.
