New Delhi, Aug 06: Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahab-ud-Din took a significant step today by dissolving the 12th parliament, which was formed through the national election held on January 7, local newspaper of Bangladesh reported.

In an official statement, Bangabhaban announced, "The decision to dissolve the parliament was taken following the president's discussions with chiefs of three staffs of armed forces, leaders of different political parties, representatives of civil society, and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement."

Additionally, the press release mentioned that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been freed. The process to release those arrested between July 1 and August has also commenced, with many individuals already being released.

According to the constitution, a general election for members of parliament must be held within ninety days preceding such dissolution if it is due to the expiration of the parliament's term. If the dissolution occurs for other reasons, the election must take place within ninety days following the dissolution.

Meanwhile, Noble Laureate Mohammad Yunus has agreed to be the chief advisor for the soon-to-be formed interim government, in line with the leaders’ demands stated in a Facebook video released this morning.
