Bajaj General Insurance busts Rs 25 crore motor accident fraud
Srinagar, Nov 13: Bajaj General Insurance Limited has uncovered a Rs 25 crore motor accident insurance fraud involving a fabricated third-party compensation claim before the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), Bhuj.
As per a statement issued by the company, the fraud was constructed through a false FIR and misleading documents aimed at securing an inflated payout. “This case reflects a premeditated attempt to deceive the insurer and misuse judicial processes,” the statement said.
The matter began with an FIR at Sanand Police Station in which the alleged driver claimed a Mahindra Xylo overturned after a dog appeared on the road, killing the co-driver. The deceased’s heirs later filed a Rs 25 crore compensation claim before the MACT, the statement said.
Upon receiving court summons, Bajaj General Insurance examined the FIR, chargesheet, post-mortem report, spot and inquest panchnamas, and vehicle documents. Finding inconsistencies, the company approached the Gujarat High Court, which termed the accident prima facie suspicious and ordered a re-investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under CID Crime Branch. MACT proceedings were stayed.
The SIT confirmed that the “co-driver” was actually driving alone, while the alleged driver filed a false FIR and fabricated evidence. The insured vehicle owner also attempted an own-damage claim despite earlier rejection.
Based on SIT findings, an FIR was filed against both individuals. Bajaj General Insurance said it maintains “zero tolerance toward fraud” and will continue cooperating with law enforcement to protect genuine policyholders, the statement added.
