Axis Bank Foundation launches sustainable livelihood programme in Ladakh
Leh, Oct 10: Axis Bank Foundation (ABF) launched a multi-year Sustainable Livelihood Programme in Leh and Kargil, partnering with Himmothan Society and Leh Nutrition Project (LNP).
A statement said that this initiative marks ABF's first foray into the Ladakh region, aiming to support rural communities by enhancing incomes through farm-based and non-farm activities.
The 5-year project (April 2024 - March 2029) will be implemented by Himmothan Society and LNP. It aims to increase income and improve living standards for rural hill communities through various livelihood interventions. The programme spans 60 villages in Leh and Kargil districts, supporting 7,500 rural families.
The project will benefit 7,500 tribal families across three clusters (Sham Valley, Changthang, and Kharu & Rong Valley) covering 14 blocks in Ladakh's two districts. It focuses on enhancing livelihoods through improved agricultural and livestock-rearing practices, as well as non-farm interventions.
Key objectives include value chain development of apricots, high-value crops, horticulture, woolen handicrafts, and dairy products. The project will also demonstrate innovative ideas in agriculture, livestock development, IT, handicrafts, and skill-based activities. It aims to address climate change and geographical isolation challenges while enhancing seasonal incomes and building ecosystem resilience.
Dr Yashpal Bisht, Executive Director of Himmothan Society and Regional Manager of Tata Trusts, stated: "This project will assist farmers in developing adaptive strategies for coping with climate changes. We're excited to collaborate with Axis Bank Foundation and government departments to deepen our impact in Ladakh."
