Srinagar, Oct 15: In recognition of breast cancer awareness month, the Cancer Society of Kashmir (CSK) organised a one-day awareness programme at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kothi Bagh. The event aimed to educate students about breast cancer and its early detection.

The program was presided over by Principal Nusrat Bukhari, who emphasised the role of educational institutions in promoting health awareness. She pledged ongoing support for similar initiatives in the future.

Keynote speaker Prof (Dr) Nisar Ahmad Wani, an onco-surgeon, discussed the objectives of CSK and the importance of conducting regular screening camps across the valley. He provided insights into benign breast diseases and their implications.

Dr Nazir Ahmad Khan, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist, addressed common myths surrounding breast cancer, reassuring attendees that it is not contagious and is treatable with early detection.

Dr. Shahida Nasreen, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at SKIMS, highlighted the risk factors for breast cancer and underscored the importance of self-examination for early detection.

The event attracted hundreds of students, culminating in a free screening conducted by Dr Nasreen and CSK staff nurse Shafeeqa Bhat. Additionally, a question-and-answer session was held, allowing students and faculty to voice their concerns and seek clarifications from the medical professionals.

Prof (Dr) Imtiyaz Ali Bhat, who oversees awareness programmes at CSK, concluded the event with key takeaways, and Prof (Dr) Akhter Naqueb, Vice Chairman-II of CSK, delivered the vote of thanks.
