Pulwama, Sep 22: Police in Awantipora have cracked a hit-and-run case within weeks of the incident, arresting the accused driver and seizing the vehicle involved in the crime.

According to police, the case pertains to July 17, 2025, when an accident was reported at Lethpora. An unknown vehicle had struck a pedestrian, identified as Habibullah Beigh, son of Mohammad Sultan Beigh, a resident of Lethpora. The injured was first shifted to a nearby hospital and later referred to SMHS Hospital Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police Station Awantipora registered a case under FIR number 161/2025 and launched an investigation. A team led by SHO Inspector Ajaz Hamd and PSI Dalbir Singh pursued the case relentlessly to trace the accused.

After hectic efforts, the driver was identified and arrested. He has been named as Raj Kumar, son of Krishan Chand, resident of Mova in Samba district of Jammu. The vehicle involved in the incident, bearing registration number JK21F-4537, has been seized.

Police said the accused is currently in custody at Police Station Awantipora, and further investigation is underway.

In a statement, police assured locals that they remain committed to acting tough against individuals involved in criminal acts. “Our efforts should assure community members that Police is resolved to act against those who endanger lives through reckless behaviour,” an official said. [KNT]
