Sonamarg, Dec 12: Popular tourist resort Sonamarg is likely to host a variety of winter sports activities and events as it braces up for winter tourism season, thus making it an all-weather tourist destination.

With Sonamarg remaining open during winters over last couple of years, since the inauguration of the Sonamarg tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hosting various winter sports events, this scenic locale has created a value addition to winter tourism destinations in the Valley.

Officials told Greater Kashmir that efforts are being made to ensure that Sonamarg becomes one among the most sought-after winter destinations . “The Sonamarg tunnel has not only bolstered the economy in Sonamarg region but also enhanced its appeal as a winter tourism destination.” The officials added that various winter sports activities like ice skating, skiing and other games are being held in Sonamarg. “ Sonamarg is in its early stage of hosting winter events and further related infrastructure is being developed here for the convenience of visitors,” the officials added.

Official sources said that with the intervention and personal interest of MLA Kangan Mian Mehar Ali and Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Jatin Kishore in making Sonamarg a hub of winter sports, the tourism department is planning to organise various local and national events during winters at Sonamarg. “Last year some winter sports games were held but this year we expect more activities during winter months,” said Mian Mehar, adding that “We are hopeful that a good snowfall during winters will ensure the winter games are held and Sonamarg is on winter tourism map.”

When contacted, Chief Executive Officer, Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA), Bilal Mukhtar said that the winter sports events and activities are planned and organised by the tourism department mainly and they have planned several such events in coming days during winter.

Meanwhile, after the setback caused by the Pahalgam terror attach to tourism sector across Kashmir, of late tourist footfall has steadily increased at Sonamarg, while the hoteliers and traders anticipate increased arrivals during the winter months. An official of the district administration said that all concerned departments are actively engaged in providing the basic infrastructure needed during winter, including electricity and water supply. “This initiative of administration has brought cheers to the faces of hoteliers, traders and even tourists from various parts of the country who are keen to enjoy the picturesque beauty of ‘Meadow of Gold’.

Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Jatin Kishore recently conducted a public outreach programme at Sonamarg to review public issues and ensure timely delivery of services, especially in view of the upcoming winter season.

A large gathering of residents from Sonamarg, Gund, Shutkari, Kullan, Gagangeer and adjoining villages participated in the programme. Officers from all line departments were also present.

Responding to community concerns about tourism and youth engagement, DC said that Sonamarg has immense potential for winter sports and urged the Youth Services and Sports department to organise activities like ice skating and skiing. DC assured that all departments will remain fully mobilised throughout winter and that action-taken reports will be monitored closely. Meanwhile, as per figures by Tourism Department in Sonamarg indicates a steady flow of visitors across different months. In July 2025, Sonamarg welcomed 25,281 domestic and 14,165 local visitors. September saw the arrival of 6,945 domestic and 17,897 local tourists, while October recorded 8,389 domestic and 5,756 local arrivals. In November, 13,527 domestic and 4,084 local tourists visited Sonamarg and enjoyed its scenic beauty.
