New Delhi, Nov 4: At least seven climbers, five foreigners and two Nepalis, have died after an avalanche struck near the base camp of Yalung Ri mountain in Nepal’s Dolakha district on Monday morning, according to expedition agency Seven Summit Treks, reports BBC.

The avalanche hit around 09:00 local time as the group was making its ascent. Rescuers have so far recovered two bodies and are continuing to search for the remaining five, believed to be buried under snow.

Meanwhile, eight other climbers were rescued and flown to Kathmandu for medical treatment, police said. The victims were part of a team that set out about an hour before the avalanche occurred. Local authorities say rescue operations are being hampered by poor weather and difficult terrain. The Yalung Ri peak, located in the Rolwaling region of Dolakha, is a popular destination for mountaineers during Nepal’s autumn climbing season.
