Avalanche blocks Sonamarg road

Ganderbal, Feb 21: An avalanche occurred near the Hung area of Sonamarg on Wednesday, blocking the Sindh stream and resulting in the closure of Sonamarg road.

An official said that an avalanche struck the Hung area of Sonamarg on the Srinagar-Leh road, blocking the flow of water in the Sindh stream.

The blockade caused by the avalanche forced a change in the course of the stream and water started flowing over the road adjacent to it, the officials said.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the Roads and Builds (R&B) Department pressed their machinery into service to clear the avalanche so that the water body took its original course and the road connectivity was restored.

The clearance work was underway till late evening.
