Authorities set the ball rolling for all-women park in Pulwama
Pulwama, May 25: In a bid to promote the public infrastructure, authorities in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have begun the process for the demarcation of land.
The proposed park, aimed at providing a safe and serene space for women, will come up in the Sirnoo area on the outskirts of town. The move is being seen as a long-overdue initiative in the district, which has lacked designated recreational facilities for women.
The project is being led by the Municipal Council Pulwama with the Administrative Department, earmarking Rs 2 crore under the 15th FC Grants for the purpose.
According to officials, the park will be equipped with modern and sophisticated facilities tailored to the needs of women, including walking tracks, green sitting areas, open-air gyms, and other arrangements.
The land for the project has already been identified by Waheed ur Rehman Parra, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and MLA from Pulwama constituency. Parra has played a key role in pushing for the initiative, which he describes as an effort to promote gender-sensitive urban planning and community well-being.
In a formal communication, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Municipal Council Pulwama has written to the Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama, seeking immediate demarcation of at least 10 kanals of land at the identified site in Sirnoo. “Your good self is requested to kindly direct the Assistant Commissioner Pulwama/Tehsildar for demarcation of minimum of 10 kanals of land for the said purpose,” the CEO said in the letter.
Locals have welcomed the move, saying the park would address a long-standing gap in the district’s infrastructure, particularly for women who often lack safe and accessible public spaces. “We hope the park is developed soon and provides a comfortable place for women to unwind, exercise, and socialise,” said Nuzhat Jan, a resident of Pulwama town.
Officials say the project is expected to add to the town’s social infrastructure and offer women and children a dedicated space for leisure and well-being.
