Srinagar, July 30: In a disturbing development that threatens the delicate ecosystem of Dachigam National Park, reports have emerged of widespread trout deaths in the Dachigam stream.

Local environmentalists and concerned citizens are raising alarms over the alleged use of bleaching powder to illegally harvest fish, a practice that not only decimates the trout population but also poses severe risks to the broader ecosystem.

The Dachigam stream, known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant aquatic life, is facing an unprecedented crisis.

According to sources familiar with the situation, thousands of trout have perished due to what appears to be deliberate poisoning with bleaching powder.

This method of fishing is not only illegal but also extremely harmful to the environment.

“It’s shameful and disgraceful,” says Bashir Guroo, a local environmental activist. “These trout are a crucial part of the Dachigam ecosystem. Their loss could have far-reaching consequences for the entire food chain in the area.”

The situation is exacerbated by the current low water levels in the stream, which concentrates the effects of any pollutants introduced into the water.

Environmentalists warn that this could lead to long-term damage to the stream’s biodiversity.

Adding to the concerns is the apparently unrestricted access to sensitive areas of the stream. Guroo points out that the right side of the Dachigam stream, particularly the area above the bridge, is open to public access.

This lack of protection has allegedly led to increased pollution and destruction of the habitat.

“The area needs to be fenced off immediately,” Guroo said. “We need to take urgent action to protect this vital ecosystem.”

Local authorities have been called upon to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring those responsible for the fish kills to justice.

Environmental groups are also pushing for stricter monitoring of the area and the implementation of conservation measures to protect the stream and its inhabitants.

This development is a stark reminder of the fragility of natural ecosystems and the urgent need for their protection.

The fate of the Dachigam stream and its trout population now hangs in the balance, awaiting decisive action from both authorities and the community at large.

When contacted an official of the Wildlife Department said the stream where the trout deaths have occurred is outside the Dachigam National Park. “It is the domain of Fisheries department,” he added.

A senior officer of J&K Fisheries Department said action will be taken against the accused. “We will take strict action against those who illegally kill fish in any stream or water body. We will also probe who provides these persons bleaching powder as it is strictly available with PHE department for cleaning drinking water in filtration plants. In the past, we have taken action against several persons. We will initiate a thorough probe in the fresh case,” he added.
