Jammu, Oct 24: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua Mohita Sharma on Friday ordered the suspension of eight policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, for their alleged inaction in a case of assault on preachers in the Juthana area of the district.

Besides, the Police also arrested one of the accused involved in the assault after registration of an FIR, while efforts were on to nab the remaining suspects.

The action was taken after a video of an assault, in the presence of police personnel, went viral on social media.

“In the Juthana area under the Rajbagh Police Station of Kathua district, preachers were attacked by a group of youths wielding sticks while they were travelling in a vehicle. The video circulating on social media shows police present at the scene, but unable to immediately stop the attackers,” a Police spokesperson said.

According to the Police, the main accused, Ravindra Singh Thela, and his associates had several prior criminal cases registered against them.

“Following the incident, Kathua police promptly initiated strict action. Eight policemen involved were suspended. An FIR has been registered against the accused. One accused has been arrested, while efforts to nab the remaining suspects are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

Suspended policemen also included seven Special Police Officers (SPOs).
