Asmita Khelo India Pencak Silat league begins in Srinagar
Srinagar, Jul 20: The Asmita Khelo India Pencak Silat League kicked off in Srinagar, bringing together young girls from across Jammu & Kashmir to showcase skill and strength in the traditional Southeast Asian martial art, as part of an initiative to promote confidence, self-defence, and inclusivity in sports.
As per a statement issued on Sunday, the event held under the banner of Khelo India’s “Asmita” initiative, the league witnessed intense bouts as budding female athletes showcased the art of Pencak Silat, a traditional Southeast Asian martial art, blending athleticism with grace and discipline.
With growing interest in indigenous and traditional martial disciplines, the league is a significant step toward broadening sports opportunities for girls in the Valley.
Organised with support from J&K Sports Council and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, the league reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive sports culture, encouraging young girls to take centre stage in disciplines historically under-represented in the region. The event is not just a competition, it’s a statement of courage, identity, and resurgence of youth potential in Kashmir.
