Ask the Doctor
Q: I keep catching a cold every winter. How can I prevent it?
A: Stay warm, eat vitamin-rich foods and wash your hands often. Avoid sudden temperature changes and crowded places when flu is spreading.
Q: I’m 34 and my father had colon cancer. What should I do?
A: With a family history, begin screening early, ideally 10 years before your father’s age at the time of diagnosis or by age 40. Eat fiber-rich foods, fruits, vegetables, avoid smoking and processed food and do regular exercise. Watch for symptoms like unexplained weight loss, blood in stool, or persistent bowel changes and talk to your doctor promptly.
Q: Is it true that drinking cold water after meals causes throat infections?
A: Not exactly. Cold water doesn’t directly cause infection, but sudden cooling can irritate the throat and lower its local immunity, paving the way for infections. During winters, drink room-temperature or preferably warm water, and maintain good hygiene.
Q: I feel dizzy when I stand up suddenly. Is that normal?
A: It could be due to a drop in blood pressure (postural hypotension), dehydration, or anemia. Stay hydrated and check with your doctor if it happens often.
Q: My 18-year-old spends hours on the phone at night and can’t sleep. Any advice?
A: Too much screen time disrupts sleep. Avoid phones 1 hour before bed, keep lights dim, and maintain a regular sleep schedule.
Q: I often skip breakfast due to rush. Is it harmful?
A: Yes. Skipping breakfast lowers energy and slows metabolism. Even a simple meal of fruit, milk, or oats can make a big difference.
Q: Can stress really cause physical illness?
A: Absolutely. Chronic stress affects immunity, digestion and the heart. Relaxation, walking, or prayer can help calm both mind and body.
Q: Are herbal or Unani remedies safe for everyone?
A: They can help if used correctly and under expert guidance. Avoid self-medicating, as dosage and diagnosis matter in traditional medicine too.
Q: My child coughs often at night. Could it be asthma?
A: Possibly. Recurrent night coughs or wheezing can be early asthma signs. See a doctor for diagnosis and inhaler advice.
Q: When should I get my blood pressure checked, I am 25?
A: Adults above 30 should check it at least once every six months, earlier if you have stress, obesity, or a family history of hypertension.
