Srinagar, Mar 2: As the holy month of Ramadhan began on Sunday, masjids reverberated with prayers and had a festive atmosphere.

People offered prayers in masjids in their respective areas. Thousands of the people provided congregational prayers at Dargah Hazratbal and historic Jamia Masjid.

“Muslims eagerly wait for this holy month, and what is better than offering prayers at such a revered religious place in Kashmir. We pray that this holy month becomes a blessing for everyone,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, a devotee.

Along with elders, masjids in Srinagar were full of youngsters, including children. Many of those who were fasting for the first time shared their joy.

“I’m a 6th-grade student, and this is my first fast. Waking up for Sehri and breaking fast with elders was a delightful experience for me. I am happy how elders encourage us so that we can be part of this holy month,” said Ibrahim, a youngster.

Meanwhile, the markets, especially fruit, vegetable, and snack vendors, witnessed a huge rush of customers. People were seen buying fruits, dates, and other snacks from the vendors for iftar.

“Iftar is incomplete without addition of fruits or snacks. After a long day of fasting, people like to break their fast with some fruits. Thanks to the almighty, we are having a good sale of fruits amid Ramdhan, and we are also earning our livelihood and feeding our families,” said Fayaz Ahmad, a fruit seller at Downtown.

In addition to vendors, the chicken and meat sellers also witnessed a significant rush of customers on the first day of Ramadhan. The customers, however, said that since the sales of vegetables, fruits, and meat will be up in Ramadhan, authorities should keep the prices in check.

‘The regulation of prices is a must so that a common man can spend this month without breaking the bank.” said a customer.
