Srinagar, Sep 29: On the occasion of World Heart Day, to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), Aryans Group of Col- leges in Rajpura, near Chandigarh, organised a seminar based on this year’s theme, "Use Heart to Connect."

Dr Karandeep S. Syal, Senior Consultant in Cardiology at My Hospital, Mohali, interacted with faculty members and Aryans students from Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Anesthesia, Medical Lab Sciences, Radiology, Operation Theatre Technology, and other fields. A speech com- petition and poster presentation were also organized during the event.

Dr. Syal stated that CVDs affect the heart and blood vessels that supply blood to the lungs, brain, kid- neys, and other parts of the body, making them the most
common cause of death globally.

He explained that these diseases are often associated with lifestyle choices such as an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption; therefore, they are preventable to some extent.

23 million predicted deaths from CVDs by 2030. About 80 percent of all CVDs manifest as heart attacks or strokes, and 75 percent of cases come from low- and middle-income countries, he added.

He emphasised that any sign of heart trouble should be taken seriously, as it is linked to longevity and survival. It is important to eat right, exercise, avoid smoking and alcohol, and steer clear of junk food to prevent heart disease, Syal stressed.
